Nebraska Farm Bureau Elects New Leaders

Nebraska Farm Bureau Elects New Leaders

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) recently held its 107th Annual Meeting and Convention in Kearney, gathering delegates from all 93 counties to discuss agricultural policies and elect new leaders. This significant event drew nearly 500 participants, focusing on setting the course for the organization's future advocacy and support efforts within the agricultural sector.

During the meeting, several key policy issues were addressed. Delegates adopted policies to update the state's electrical transmission infrastructure, essential for keeping pace with growing energy demands, particularly from the agricultural sector.

However, there was opposition to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Interest Electric Corridors, citing concerns over local autonomy and environmental impacts.

The conference also spotlighted the importance of renewable fuels. A new policy supporting the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) was adopted, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign oil and open new markets for Nebraska's producers.

Mark McHargue, NEFB President, emphasized the dual benefits of this initiative: enhancing agricultural profitability and promoting sustainable practices without imposing restrictive feedstock requirements.

The gathering also reinforced support for the next generation of farmers and ranchers, advancing a policy to make USDA and Farm Service Agency loans more accessible and flexible. This move is aimed at addressing the barriers young farmers face, such as land and capital access, crucial for the continuity and rejuvenation of Nebraska's farming community.

Concerns about food labeling and consumer choice were also prominent, with a strong stance on not using state funds for research or purchase of lab-produced protein products. Delegates underscored the necessity for transparent labeling of such products to ensure consumer trust and choice.

In terms of leadership, the convention saw the re-election of key figures and the introduction of new representatives to the NEFB board of directors, ensuring continued experienced and fresh perspectives in steering the bureau's efforts. This leadership is vital for navigating the challenges and opportunities facing Nebraska's agricultural sector, particularly in areas like rural veterinary access and agricultural education.

As the Nebraska Farm Bureau moves forward, these policies and leadership decisions will play a crucial role in shaping the state's agricultural landscape, advocating for practices and policies that ensure economic sustainability and enhance the quality of life for rural Nebraskans.
