Nebraska Field Day on Crop Weeds

Nebraska Field Day on Crop Weeds

By Scout Nelson

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s South-Central Agricultural Laboratory near Clay Center is set to host the eagerly awaited Nebraska Extension Weed Management Field Day on June 25, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. This event is designed for growers, crop consultants, agriculture professionals, extension educators, and industry stakeholders.

This year’s field day promises a comprehensive agenda with live demonstrations focusing on innovative weed control techniques in corn, sorghum, and soybeans. Attendees will have the opportunity to see firsthand the effectiveness of different herbicides and cover crop strategies designed to manage weeds. The morning will begin with a specific focus on soybean weed control, transitioning to corn and sorghum as the day progresses.

Extension Weed Management Specialist Amit Jhala highlighted several key projects to be showcased. These include cutting-edge approaches in XtendFlex soybean, Enlist Soybean, Roundup Ready/Liberty Link corn, and Double Team sorghum. Each demonstration is tailored to provide practical insights that can be directly applied to improve crop management practices.

Adding to this year’s lineup, new research projects will be introduced, such as techniques for terminating cereal rye before and after corn planting, using hairy vetch to suppress weeds in sorghum, and integrated strategies for managing volunteer corn in corn fields. These additions aim to equip attendees with knowledge about the latest trends and technologies in weed management.

Participants can also earn Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) continuing education units by attending this event, adding further value to their professional development. A complimentary lunch and UNL Dairy Store ice cream will be provided, offering a chance for attendees to network and discuss the insights gained throughout the day.

Registration for the Weed Management Field Day is required but free of charge. Interested individuals are encouraged to register online to secure their spot. This event not only offers a deep dive into practical weed control strategies but also fosters a community of learning and collaboration among agriculture professionals.
