The North Platte Natural Resources District (NRD) is actively informing the public about the current drought conditions and encouraging responsible soil and water conservation practices. The region is currently facing a D2 level drought, considered severe, and could escalate to D3, or extreme drought, if dry conditions continue. To reduce the impact of this situation, the NRD urges farmers, ranchers, and residents to adopt water-saving techniques and remain updated on weather conditions.
In response to ongoing environmental challenges, the North Platte NRD works closely with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to monitor soil health using the Nebraska NRCS Soil-loss Tolerance model. This model helps determine acceptable levels of soil loss caused by wind or water erosion. If the loss exceeds the set limit, further steps may be taken to bring it back within a safe range.
These efforts fall under the Erosion and Sediment Control Act, which helps prevent soil degradation on highly erodible lands. By collaborating with landowners, the NRD promotes sustainable farming practices that protect long-term agricultural productivity.
To learn more about current drought conditions and soil conservation guidelines, individuals are encouraged to visit the North Platte NRD website or call their office at 308-632-2749.
