On August 29, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen and Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) Director Sherry Vinton, along with livestock producers, gathered in West Point to discuss three key initiatives aimed at safeguarding consumers and the state’s livestock industry from lab-grown meat.
Lab-grown meat, produced by manufacturing cells in a controlled environment rather than traditional meat processing, has raised concerns. Governor Pillen signed an executive order creating strict guidelines for state agencies and contractors regarding lab-grown meat. “Nebraska farmers and ranchers… are committed to producing the best food products anywhere,” said Pillen.
The Governor emphasized that Nebraska consumers deserve transparency about the meat they purchase. A public hearing is set for October 8 to discuss draft regulations. NDA is also working to ensure that lab-grown meat products are clearly labeled and kept separate from natural meat in stores.
Oak Barn Beef owner Hannah Klitz highlighted the importance of educating consumers about the origin of their food, while cattle producer Jeanne Reigle stressed the need to support Nebraska's agriculture and maintain quality standards in livestock products.
In addition to the executive order, Governor Pillen announced plans to draft legislation banning lab-grown meat in Nebraska during the next legislative session.
