The University of Nebraska–Lincoln celebrated a historic milestone during its May 8-9 commencement ceremonies by awarding a record of 3,885 degrees. University officials also announced a record 3,762 graduates representing 61 countries, 46 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, and more than 230 Nebraska communities.
The ceremonies recognized students for their academic achievements while encouraging graduates to use their education to make a positive impact on their communities and careers. University leaders highlighted the importance of leadership, service, and personal responsibility during the celebrations.
During the undergraduate commencement ceremony on May 9, Interim Chancellor Katherine S. Ankerson delivered a message focused on leadership and purpose. She encouraged graduates to continue the university’s tradition of helping others and creating meaningful change.
“This is a time when the world needs Huskers more than ever,” Interim Chancellor Katherine S. Ankerson said during the morning undergraduate ceremony May 9. “You are the newest addition to our university’s living legacy of inspiring and equipping learners, leaders and scholars who change the world. Our people lead with purpose — purpose beyond themselves.
“That might sound like a daunting challenge, but Huskers like you affect change every day, in industries, in communities and in your families. That is both the promise and the responsibility of higher education.”
The commencement ceremony also featured keynote speaker DeMoine Adams, a former Husker football student-athlete and business leader. Adams currently serves as CEO of The Game Plan: Ready, Set, Perform and previously led TeamMates Mentoring as CEO.
As a first-generation college student who earned two degrees from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Adams shared personal experiences about leadership, perseverance, and the value of relationships. His speech, titled “The Power of People,” encouraged graduates to appreciate the people who support and inspire them throughout life.
Adams reminded students that success is not measured only by personal achievements or material possessions. Instead, he emphasized that strong relationships, teamwork, and helping others create the greatest value in life.
University officials said the graduating class reflects the institution’s growing global reach and commitment to preparing future leaders. Graduates now move forward into careers, communities, and industries where they can apply their education and leadership skills to serve others and make a lasting difference.
