Nebraska Hosts Pea Plot Tour

Nebraska Hosts Pea Plot Tour

By Scout Nelson

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is organizing a field pea plot tour to support the growing interest in field pea production across the state. The event will take place on Tuesday, June 23, starting at 10 a.m. Central Time at the research farm near Haskell Ag Lab, part of the Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center.

The tour will provide participants with a close look at ongoing research and crop performance. It will focus on spring pea variety trials and agronomic studies. A total of 19 pea varieties from five seed companies will be displayed, including Progene Plant Research, Puris, Valesco Genetics, and Meridian Seeds. Researchers are studying seed rates for different planting populations and examining the effects of zinc seed treatment and genetics on cadmium levels in pea seeds.

This event offers a valuable learning opportunity for participants to explore new crop varieties and discuss topics such as agronomy and marketing. Attendees will walk through the plots, observe crop conditions, and exchange ideas about the challenges and opportunities in expanding field pea production in northeastern Nebraska.

Experts from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the pea industry will guide discussions and answer questions. The interactive nature of the tour allows participants to share their own observations and experiences, making the learning process more practical and engaging. No formal presentations will be held, ensuring an open and discussion-based environment.

AGENDA

  • 10 a.m. — Sign-up with donuts and beverages and coffee
  • 10:15 a.m. — Transport to the plot site
  • 10:30 a.m. to noon — Plot tour and presentation with questions and answers
  • Noon to 1 p.m. — Lunch and presentation/discussion

The event is open to producers, agronomists, and industry partners, and no registration is required. The tour will be held at Haskell Ag Lab, Concord, Nebraska.

Participants are encouraged to attend and gain practical knowledge about field pea production. This event provides an excellent opportunity to understand research advancements and contribute to the future of field pea farming.
