Nebraska's Success at AFBF Policy Session

Nebraska's Success at AFBF Policy Session

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation (NEFB) took a leading role at the 106th American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. Representing Nebraska, NEFB delegates successfully influenced key federal policies that impact the agricultural sector nationwide.

During this pivotal event, nearly 400 delegates from various state Farm Bureaus convened to discuss and pass numerous federal policy resolutions, which set the agenda for the AFBF’s policy focus throughout the year. Notably, policies supported by NEFB at their own annual meeting in December 2024, including those advocating for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) development and reforms to USDA loan programs, were incorporated into the AFBF’s national policy framework.

One significant achievement highlighted by NEFB was the adoption of new policies concerning the impact of tariffs on farm and ranch inputs, as well as policies supporting SAF production exclusively from U.S.-sourced feedstocks. This move aims to protect U.S. farmers from competitive disadvantages in the SAF market, especially against imported products.

Additionally, the AFBF delegates approved NEFB-proposed updates to USDA loan programs. These updates are designed to provide more stability and certainty to farming families, including a pre-approval process for USDA loans that could significantly benefit young and beginning farmers.

The discussions also covered broader trade and tariff policies, especially in light of ongoing global economic and security challenges.

With a new administration in the White House and shifts in federal agency leadership, NEFB is poised to advocate for Nebraska’s agricultural interests, focusing on expanding trade and ensuring fair trade practices.

Furthermore, the NEFB’s influence extended beyond policymaking. Nebraska representatives participated in Young Farmers and Ranchers competitive events, showcasing the state’s commitment to fostering new agricultural talent.

The Nebraska Farm Bureau continues to serve as a crucial advocate for Nebraska's farm and ranch families, striving to enhance both rural and urban prosperity through robust educational, service, and advocacy efforts.

With over 56,000 family members statewide, NEFB remains committed to advancing Nebraska’s agricultural legacy and economic vitality.
