Nebraska Dairy Output Drops in 2024

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska's dairy industry experienced a decline in milk production during the fourth quarter of 2024, with total output reaching 307 million pounds, a 6% decrease from the previous year, as reported by the USDA National Agricultural Statistical Service (NASS). The state also saw a reduction in the average number of milk cows, which decreased by 4,000 heads to 49,000.

Concurrently, significant developments in the global beef market were noted. Bloomberg reported that Brazil, currently the world's leading beef exporter, is initiating discussions to commence beef exports to Japan, which is the second-largest importer of U.S. beef. This move could potentially reshape trade dynamics in the beef market.

In the broader US livestock sector, the Daily Livestock Report highlighted a marginal increase in commercial beef production for 2024, with a total nearing 27 billion pounds. This slight growth of 0.1% was supported by a 3.2% increase in dressed weights, which helped to counterbalance a 3.1% reduction in total slaughter numbers.

Pork production in the United States also showed positive trends, increasing by 1.8% to reach 27.8 billion pounds. This rise was propelled by a 1.3% increase in slaughter totals and a modest 0.4% increase in average dressed weights.

Additionally, Nebraska’s large feedlots, those with capacities of 1,000 or more head, reported a 1% increase in cattle on feed as of January 1, totaling 2.58 million head, according to NASS. This indicates a steady demand within the beef sector, despite fluctuating market conditions.

These figures reflect a period of adjustment and growth within the U.S. livestock industry, influenced by both domestic factors and international trade opportunities. The industry's ability to adapt to these changes will be crucial for future stability and growth in both the domestic and global markets.
