Blackshirt Feeders, a cutting-edge feedlot located north of Haigler, Nebraska, is set to become the state's largest cattle feeding operation. Managed by a group of Canadian veterinarians with extensive feedlot experience, the facility will initially house 50,000 cattle, eventually expanding to 150,000 head over the next two years.
The feedlot is being constructed with state-of-the-art features, including a rolled, compacted concrete base designed to reduce odors, improve animal health, and enhance manure management. The facility plans to convert manure into methane through biodigesters, showcasing its commitment to sustainability.
“We want to really showcase this thing,” said Eric Behlke, one of the veterinarians behind the project, adding that southwest Nebraska offers ideal conditions for cattle feeding.
Despite local support, some concerns remain about the environmental impact on groundwater and increased traffic. However, the project has addressed these concerns by retiring irrigation systems to offset water usage and working closely with state officials to ensure safety and environmental compliance.
The feedlot promises to bring economic benefits to the region, including the creation of 120 jobs with an annual payroll of $25 million. As the facility nears completion, residents, while hopeful, are cautiously optimistic about the long-term success of this massive operation.
Behlke is confident in the project’s success, stating, “We have always said what we’re going to do. There’s plenty of evidence now that we’ve made good on our promises.”
