Propane Keeps Farms Running Strong

Propane Keeps Farms Running Strong

By Jamie Martin

With rising concerns about grid instability, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is spotlighting propane as a reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy choice for farmers. The fourth annual National Propane Day, celebrated on October 7, carries the theme “Prepare with Propane,” reminding producers that the best energy solutions are those available when others fail.

According to a U.S. Department of Energy report, nationwide blackouts could increase significantly by 2030 due to growing energy demands. Propane stands out as a resilient option because it is stored locally, ready for use at any time, and unaffected by grid failures.

Farmers depend on propane to power grain dryers, irrigation engines, livestock heaters, and backup generators. Its dependable performance ensures farm productivity, especially during key periods like harvest or winter. Moreover, propane’s lower emissions make it an environmentally responsible fuel that supports sustainability targets.

“Farmers can’t afford downtime during harvest or calving season,” said Mike Newland, PERC’s director of agriculture business development. “Propane gives them the confidence that their grain dryers, irrigation pumps, and backup generators will run when the grid can’t. It’s energy independence right on the farm.”

Through its online resource at Propane.com/Agriculture, PERC provides planning tools, equipment incentives, and supplier connections to help producers strengthen their energy reliability.

By investing in propane systems, farmers gain greater control over their energy supply, safeguard productivity, and reduce environmental impact. National Propane Day serves as a timely reminder that energy independence begins right on the farm with propane.
