Soybeans go green - Scoular's new initiative

By Jamie Martin

Scoular, an Omaha-based agribusiness, has introduced a new initiative under the USDA's Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities program. This initiative aims to encourage soybean producers to adopt environmentally friendly practices such as no-till and cover crops, with incentives reaching up to $110 per acre.

The program specifically targets soybean producers in select regions, rewarding them for practices that reduce greenhouse emissions, enhance carbon sequestration, and improve soil health.

According to Eric Kresin, a general manager in Scoular’s Grain Division, "Sustainability is important for our company and is crucial for the agriculture industry. We are excited we can support producers in their sustainability efforts."

Participants in this program contribute to a more sustainable supply chain, benefiting not only the environment but also enhancing the traceability and quality of food-grade soybeans. These practices are financially supported on a per-acre basis and include conservation crop rotation and nutrient management among others.

Scoular has processed its first batch of Climate-Smart soybeans at its advanced grain-cleaning facility in Andres, Illinois, marking a significant step towards a sustainable agricultural system.

The initiative underscores a broader commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible farming practices across the supply chain.
