Students Test Water Quality Locally

Students Test Water Quality Locally

By Scout Nelson

Students across Nebraska are learning about groundwater and its importance through the Know Your Well program. This educational initiative is designed to help young learners understand how water systems work and why maintaining good water quality is important for health and agriculture.

The program was developed by the Nebraska Water Center, which is part of the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute. Since its beginning in 2017, it has grown into a regular learning opportunity that schools continue to use every year. The program combines classroom learning with practical field activities, making it engaging and effective for students.

In this program, students study basic groundwater science and explore how wells function in their local communities. After learning theory in class, students go outside to collect water samples from nearby wells. They also carry out wellhead assessments and identify possible sources of pollution such as septic tanks and agricultural land.

Students use simple water testing kits in their classrooms to check water quality. They also send sample copies to a professional lab at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. This allows them to compare their results with expert analysis, helping them better understand scientific accuracy and methods.

The program also provides useful teaching materials. Guides and lesson plans help teachers easily conduct sessions. Local experts from natural resource districts and health departments support the program by sharing knowledge and helping answer questions.

This hands-on approach makes learning more interesting and meaningful. Students understand the connection between water quality, environment, and human health. They also learn the importance of regular well testing and how it can affect daily life.

Teachers and regional leaders highlight that this program strengthens community involvement. It allows students to apply their knowledge in real situations and interact with people in their local area.

The Know Your Well program continues to expand and reach more schools. It provides students with valuable learning experiences and builds awareness about environmental protection.
