Training For Better Crop Management

Training For Better Crop Management

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska Extension is offering an introductory crop scout training program on Tuesday, May 19, designed to help participants improve their pest management and field scouting skills. The training is open to industry representatives, students, and individuals interested in crop production, especially those working with corn and soybean crops.

The program is suitable for entry-level scouts who work with agronomists, crop consultants, and farm service centers. It is also helpful for those who manage their own fields and want to gain better knowledge of crop health and pest control.

The in-person training will be held at the Eastern Nebraska Research Extension and Education Center near Mead, Nebraska. The session will run from 9 a.m. to 4:40 p.m., with registration starting at 8:30 a.m.

“We look forward to providing participants a hands-on, in-person experience focusing on important crop scouting skills,” said Aaron Nygren.

The training will cover several important topics to help participants understand crop conditions and improve field decisions. These include scouting techniques, hands-on field practice, and understanding crop growth stages for corn and soybeans. Participants will also learn to identify crop diseases, weeds, and insects, along with their management methods. In addition, the program will explain how to recognize nutrient deficiencies in crops.

This training provides practical field experience that helps participants improve accuracy in scouting and make better decisions during the growing season. Past attendees have reported increased confidence and better identification skills after attending the program.

The cost of the training is $115, which includes lunch, refreshments, workshop materials, and a detailed instruction manual. A reduced fee of $75 is available for those who do not need the manual. Pre-registration is required by May 15 to secure a seat and ensure materials are prepared.

For more information, participants can contact Nebraska Extension at (402) 624-8030.
