UNL Greenhouse Hydroponics Open House

UNL Greenhouse Hydroponics Open House

By Scout Nelson

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is opening its doors to the public for two special hydroponic open house events. These events will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on December 2 and December 4 inside the Plant Science Teaching Greenhouse located at 3855 Fair Street. Community members are encouraged to stop by, explore student projects, and learn about modern hydroponic production.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet several student groups who have developed their own unique hydroponic prototypes. These systems demonstrate creative approaches to growing fresh greens, fruits, and edible flowers without soil.

Each student team will share the purpose behind their design, explain how the system works, and discuss the benefits of hydroponic growing. Attendees will see a wide variety of systems, including deep-water culture, thin film technology, Bato buckets, raft setups, tower systems, gutter culture, and other innovative designs.

Stacy Adams, professor of practice in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, teaches Plant and Landscape Systems 307: Hydroponics for Growing Populations. This course has been offered for five years within the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, inspiring students to explore solutions for future food production. Adams said there will also be a seasonal treat provided during the event, adding a warm and festive touch inside the cozy greenhouse.

The open house is designed to encourage learning, discussion, and collaboration. Guests can move freely through the greenhouse, view each project, and ask students questions about their ideas and design processes. The event is open to all ages and offers a welcoming environment for anyone interested in agriculture, sustainability, or modern plant-growing methods.

Guests should enter through the north door of the Plant Science Teaching Greenhouse, located across from the Animal Science Complex. Metered parking is available in the lot east of the greenhouse, across North 39th Street.

These open houses offer an exciting chance for the public to see innovation in action and to appreciate the talent and creativity of students shaping the future of hydroponic production
