Nebraska's crop acreage report shows a 1% increase in planted crop acres, equivalent to 125,000 acres, compared to 2021. The total planted acres reached 19.4 million in 2023, falling short of the 2021 high of 19.8 million. The report highlights the shift in acres planted for various crops, with farmers responding to market dynamics and climate conditions.
Sunflower acres witnessed the largest decline, decreasing by 25 percent. Conversely, winter wheat acreage saw the most significant gain, rising by 17 percent. This increase can be attributed to higher wheat prices fueled by concerns over global supply and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Nebraska's corn and soybean acreage decreased by 1% and 5% this spring, respectively. Corn acreage reached 9.5 million acres, while soybean acreage decreased by 5%. Nationally, corn acreage reached 94.1 million acres, a 6% increase, while soybean acreage decreased by 5% to 83.5 million acres.
It is possible that some of the lost corn and soybean acres were converted to hay or wheat, as reflected by a 220,000-acre increase in hay acreage and a 170,000-acre increase in wheat acreage. Other crops experiencing acreage growth include potatoes (5 percent), sorghum (6 percent), and oats (16 percent).
The potential yields for this year's crop production remain uncertain. NASS reports that as of July 2, 49 percent of corn acres and 43 percent of soybean acres in Nebraska were rated as good or excellent, which is lower than the typical ratings for this time of year.
Drought conditions impacted corn and soybean production in the previous year, resulting in a 21 percent and 22 percent decrease, respectively, compared to 2021. While some areas have witnessed improvements due to recent rainfall, timely precipitation will be crucial to avoid a repeat of last year's production challenges.
Nebraska's crop acreage report reveals a mixed landscape as farmers navigate market fluctuations and climatic conditions, showcasing their adaptability and resilience in the face of agricultural uncertainties.
