Effective January 1, meat, poultry, and egg products labeled as “Product of USA” must meet new USDA requirements. Finalized in March 2024, the regulation establishes strict guidelines for U.S.-origin claims.
To qualify, animals must be born, raised, harvested, and processed entirely in the United States. Imported live animals brought into the U.S. for feeding, processing, or slaughter cannot be used for these labels. Minimally processed products may carry a qualified statement, such as “packaged in the U.S. using imported pork,” if applicable.
While labeling is optional, any use of “Product of USA,” “Made in USA,” or an American flag symbol requires documentation proving the claim. USDA provides general approval for labels, so no special verification programs or additional approvals are necessary.
For products with multiple ingredients, all components excluding spices and flavorings must meet U.S.-origin criteria. For example, a sausage containing both beef and pork would need to source both meats from animals fully processed in the U.S. to use the claim.
The rule also allows for state-specific labels, such as “Product of Iowa,” when criteria are satisfied. The regulation only applies to meat sold domestically; exports must follow the labeling requirements of the destination country.
The change ensures consumers can confidently identify genuinely American meat products while promoting transparency and consistency in U.S. food labeling.
