Vermont Dairy Gains in China Market

Vermont Dairy Gains in China Market

By Jamie Martin

Global trade disputes have affected agricultural markets across the United States. Many states experienced declining export activity with China in 2025. Vermont, however, recorded strong growth in dairy export revenue.

From January through August 2025, Vermont’s agricultural exports to China increased by over 78% compared to the same period last year. Most of this growth came from whey, a byproduct of cheese production widely used in nutrition products, baby formula, and animal feed.

The increase was mainly driven by higher international whey prices rather than an increase in shipment volume. This price growth raised total export values while production levels remained stable.

Agri-Mark, Vermont’s largest dairy cooperative, leads the state’s whey exports to China. Because Vermont produces a relatively small amount of whey compared to other states, even moderate price changes can result in large percentage gains.

Vermont exported $4.8 million worth of whey to China during the first nine months of 2025, exceeding previous annual records. Earlier years recorded lower values, showing steady improvement in export earnings.

Local dairy farmers benefit from these gains, even if they are not directly involved in export operations. Higher revenue for processors helps maintain stable milk prices and consistent demand for raw milk supplies.

While national agricultural exports to China declined sharply, Vermont’s dairy sector demonstrated resilience. Rising whey demand in international markets continues to provide valuable income opportunities and supports the long-term stability of Vermont’s dairy industry.
