Corn and Soybean Conditions Experience Slight Decline, Winter Wheat Holds Steady


According to the latest Crop Progress Report for the week ending June 18, 2023, fieldwork faced limited opportunities with only 6.0 days suitable for activity. The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service indicated varying moisture levels, with topsoil moisture supplies categorized as 28% very short, 33% short, 38% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were reported as 34% very short, 37% short, 29% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Here are the highlights from the Field Crops Report:

Corn condition fell somewhat, with 8% classified very poor, 10% poor, 23 ir, 43% good, and 16% excellent.

Soybean: Soybean condition also declined slightly, with 9% classified very poor, 12% poor, 29 ir, 38% good, and 12% excellent. Soybeans emergence progressed at 96%, above both last year's 93% and the five-year average of 91%.

Winter wheat condition remained steady, with 15% classified very poor, 19% poor, 31 middling, 32% fair, and 3% excellent. Winter wheat heading progress was 94%, consistent with last year's statistics and close to the 93% average.

Sorghum: The overall condition of sorghum was favorable, with only 2% rated very poor, 6% poor, 26 indifferent, and 61% good, , and 5% excellent. Sorghum planting progress reached 95%, slightly ahead of last year's 94% and the 93% average.

Oats: Oats condition varied, with 9% rated very poor, 17% rated poor, 38% Fair, 32% good, and 4% rated outstanding. Oats heading progress was reported at 65%, which is slightly lower than last year's 68% and falls short of the 70% average.

Dry Edible Beans: Planting progress for dry edible beans was 76%, trailing last year's 84%. The emergence rate reached 48%, trailing previous year's rate of 55%.

In terms of pasture and range conditions, 20% were very poor, 15% poor, 30% Air, 29% good, and 6% excellent.

While certain crops experienced a slight decline in conditions, overall progress and development remained steady. Challenges in fieldwork and moisture supply continue to impact crop growth.
