Empowering women in ag - 38th Nebraska conference 2023

By Scout Nelson

The 38th edition of the Nebraska Women in Agriculture Conference is scheduled for February 23-24, 2023, at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Kearney. This event is a cornerstone for educational and networking opportunities for women involved in all aspects of agriculture.

Kicking off the event, a pre-conference workshop will be held on February 22, focusing on QuickBooks Online. Mary Faber, a QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisor, will lead this training, equipping attendees with essential financial management skills.

The conference itself promises a blend of education and inspiration. Keynote speakers include Kiah Twisselman Burchett, a motivational rancher from California; Paul Stoddard, an agricultural economics expert from the University of Illinois; and Anne Meis, a dedicated Nebraska farmer with extensive industry experience.

A special highlight of the conference is the live performance of “Map of My Kingdom,” a play addressing the vital issue of land transition, written by former Iowa poet laureate Mary Swander.

The conference offers over 20 workshops spanning five key areas of agricultural risk management: production, market, financial, human, and legal. These sessions are designed to provide comprehensive insights into various aspects of agricultural management.

Continuing education credits are available for veterinary medicine professionals and certified crop advisors, making this event beneficial for a wide range of professionals in the agricultural sector.

Jessica Groskopf, director of the Nebraska Women in Agriculture program, emphasizes the lasting impact of the conference. The event is not just a learning opportunity but a platform for making lasting connections in the industry.

Registration for the conference opened on January 3, with an early bird rate available until February 8. The pre-conference workshop requires a separate registration fee.

The Nebraska Women in Agriculture program is offering scholarships for students to attend the conference. These scholarships are open to students at various educational levels, and applicants are required to submit an essay explaining their interest in attending the conference.

For more information and registration details, interested individuals can visit the Nebraska Women in Agriculture website at https://wia.unl.edu. This program is supported by USDA/NIFA under Award Number 2020-70028-32728, reflecting its commitment to advancing the role of women in agriculture.
