In 2023, Nebraska's agricultural sector, led by the Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB), demonstrated remarkable resilience amidst challenges like drought and economic fluctuations. NEFB's crucial role in advocating for Nebraska's farmers and ranchers included securing property tax relief, promoting livestock agriculture growth, and influencing federal agricultural policy.
Mark McHargue, NEFB President, emphasized Nebraska's critical role in national agriculture, advocating for progressive conversations on taxes, trade, water, energy, and environmental issues. This strategic approach was essential in addressing the complexities of a $100 billion agricultural sector.
One of the year's highlights was the historic tax relief, benefiting all Nebraskans and notably reducing property taxes by 30 percent by 2030. NEFB's grassroots advocacy played a crucial role in maintaining special valuation status for agricultural land annexed into city limits, saving significant costs for family farms.
NEFB's efforts also extended to reinforcing Nebraska's status as a global leader in protein production. Initiatives included expanding tax credits for livestock operations and advocating for federal legislation to counteract California's Proposition 12, thus protecting nationwide production practices.
In the legislative arena, NEFB focused on the Farm Bill, advocating for federal crop insurance protection and USDA disaster program reforms. Despite a one-year extension, NEFB remains committed to a Farm Bill that aligns with Nebraska farmers' needs.
Water management continued to be a priority, with NEFB securing a significant legal victory in the Sackett v. EPA case, influencing federal regulations on water. Additionally, NEFB facilitated projects like the Perkins County Canal, ensuring water rights and access to safe drinking water for Nebraskans.
Political advocacy was another cornerstone of NEFB's strategy, with the NEFB Political Action Committee (NEFB-PAC) successfully endorsing agricultural advocates in various elected positions. This effort underlines NEFB's commitment to fostering a supportive political environment for agriculture.
McHargue highlighted the necessity of purposeful leadership in agriculture, emphasizing the need for dedicated individuals in key decision-making roles at all levels.
NEFB's 2024 agenda includes influencing the Farm Bill's completion and addressing Proposition 12 at the federal level. The state aims to balance property, income, and sales tax for a sustainable future in Nebraska's agriculture, ensuring continued growth and prosperity for the community.
