University President Gold Boosts Education in Nebraska

By Scout Nelson

University of Nebraska President Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., embarked on a statewide tour in July to engage with Nebraska communities and highlight the university’s role in shaping the future of the state.

The tour began on July 10 with a visit to Norfolk and continued from July 21-25, covering communities such as Peru, Auburn, Beatrice, Grand Island, Kearney, Curtis, North Platte, Scottsbluff, Alliance, and Chadron. Throughout the tour, Dr. Gold visited state colleges, community colleges, businesses, hospitals, chambers of commerce, university campuses, and research sites.

“During my travels across Nebraska over the past month, I again witnessed first-hand the collaboration between the university and our communities, schools, hospitals, businesses, farms and ranches,” said Dr. Gold. “It is clear Nebraskans value their public university and are excited to strengthen the partnership between the University of Nebraska and residents of our state. I have never felt prouder and more humbled to lead this incredible university.”

Over six days, President Gold traveled 1,500 miles and met with nearly 500 people, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, business leaders, and community members. He discussed workforce development, educational access, and the university’s long-term impact on Nebraska communities.

Discussions focused on strengthening the workforce pipeline, expanding transfer programs, and celebrating local arts and culture in towns like North Platte and Grand Island.

“Their passion is evident in the questions they ask, the solutions they pursue, and the pride they take in serving their communities. It is this spirit of excellence that will drive discovery and ultimately improve lives across Nebraska,” Dr. Gold said.

This tour took place amid budget challenges for the university, as it prepares to cut $20 million from its systemwide budget due to rising costs and limited state and federal investment. Despite these financial challenges, President Gold expressed confidence in the university’s future, emphasizing the importance of continued partnerships and investment from Nebraskans.

“Everywhere I traveled, one thing was clear: Nebraskans believe in their university and the role it plays in building a stronger future,” Dr. Gold said.
