Fewer Nebraska Youth Taking Part in Corn Detasseling Jobs

By Scout Nelson

For generations, corn detasseling has been a summer tradition for young people in rural Nebraska. Before sunrise, workers ages 14 to 25 head into cornfields to remove tassels by hand, helping seed corn producers maintain hybrid crop quality. Despite its long history, fewer local youth are taking part in the work today.

Agricultural labor experts say many young people are choosing retail and food service jobs that offer competitive wages and less physically demanding conditions. University of Nebraska extension educator Shannon Sand noted that community employment patterns have shifted since 2020, with more accessible alternatives available to young workers.

Buffalo County contractor Brian Hagan has seen the impact firsthand. His company once employed about 180 workers and detasseled roughly 2,500 acres of corn, but today the workforce has shrunk to around 75 employees, reducing the number of acres that can be covered each season.

Even with the challenges, some workers continue to view detasseling as a worthwhile summer opportunity. Fredrick Harbols has been working in the fields since age 13, while college student Drey Sanchez has relied on the seasonal income for years. Sanchez earned more than $5,000 during about three weeks of work in 2025.

The decline in local participation has drawn attention from state policymakers. A 2024 Nebraska law now requires reporting on acres detasseled by local workers and migrant laborers. While detasseling remains an important part of Nebraska agriculture, labor shortages are expected to continue, reflecting broader changes in the state's seasonal workforce.
