Master Dry lot feeding for cow-calf

Master Dry lot feeding for cow-calf

By Scout Nelson

As drought conditions persist in Nebraska, particularly in the western and north-central regions, the Nebraska Extension is set to host a timely webinar focused on dry lot feeding for cow-calf pairs. Scheduled for January 13, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. MT, this webinar will provide crucial insights and practical advice for cattle producers facing limited pasture availability.

The session, titled "Dry lot Feeding Cow-Calf Pairs in the Spring and Summer of 2025," is designed to help producers navigate the challenges posed by severe to extreme drought conditions as reported by the U.S. Drought Monitor.

With the potential delay in pasture turnout times, it is vital for producers to explore alternative feeding strategies to ensure the nutritional needs of both cows and calves are met.

Dr. Karla Wilke, a Cow-Calf Systems Specialist with the Nebraska Extension, will lead the webinar. She will discuss the increased nutritional demands during lactation, which requires more protein and energy than gestation. Dr. Wilke will explain how producers can incorporate low-quality forages or residues into confinement diets, supplemented with necessary energy and protein sources to adequately support the cow-calf pairs.

Key logistical considerations for setting up a dry lot system will be covered, including requirements for bunk space, water access, fencing, shade, and creep feeding areas for calves. Participants will also learn about the cost implications of various rations based on current commodity prices, the differences between limit feeding and full feeding, and the use of annual forages to complement dry lot diets.

Health management for both calves and cows, along with strategies for breeding in a dry lot setting, will be addressed to ensure comprehensive care. The webinar aims to arm producers with knowledge from university research and real-world applications by those who have successfully implemented dry lot feeding systems.

This educational event is crucial for producers looking to adapt to ongoing drought impacts efficiently. By understanding the options available and preparing adequately, they can ensure the sustainability of their operations despite challenging environmental conditions. Pre-registration for the webinar is recommended, requiring only a computer and internet connection to participate.
