Milk Demand Rises as Alternatives Fall

Milk Demand Rises as Alternatives Fall

By Jamie Martin

Market trends in 2025 highlighted continued strength for dairy milk as consumer demand remained stable and plant-based beverages experienced another decline. Retail figures showed that alternative drinks made from almonds, soy, and other ingredients dropped significantly, while fluid milk maintained steady sales levels.

The decline in plant-based beverages has been building over several years. Since 2021, sales in this category have fallen notably, including the steepest annual drop recorded in 2025. This change allowed dairy milk to expand its share of the total beverage market, continuing with a four-year pattern of gradual growth.

Several factors explain this shift. Consumers are increasingly interested in foods that offer clear nutritional benefits and dependable value. Milk is widely recognized for providing protein, calcium, and other essential nutrients, which supports its image as a complete and reliable beverage. In contrast, some alternatives rely on added ingredients or processing that may not appeal to consumers seeking simple, traditional options.

Despite the decline, plant-based beverages remain present in the marketplace. Almond-based drinks still hold the largest portion of the alternative segment, though sales have decreased. Soy beverages also dropped, while oat-based products posted slight gains, showing that demand still exists among certain groups.

Industry discussions continue regarding labeling standards and the importance of helping consumers understand nutritional differences between dairy and alternatives. Clear information may influence future purchasing decisions as shoppers become more selective about what they consume.

Overall, the market data suggests that real milk continues to hold a strong position because of its nutritional reputation, affordability, and consumer trust. While plant-based beverages will likely remain available, dairy’s steady gains indicate that many consumers are returning to traditional choices that align with their health and value priorities.
