The Nebraska Farm Bureau held its annual meeting in Kearney from December 8-10, where President Mark McHargue delivered a compelling address. McHargue highlighted the critical importance of agriculture in Nebraska and the ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable and profitable farming practices amid challenging economic and environmental conditions.
During his speech, McHargue underscored the dual objectives of producing safe, sustainable food and safeguarding natural resources, stressing that both goals are achievable concurrently.
He reflected on his recent trade mission to the United Kingdom, drawing comparisons between the agricultural challenges faced by both regions while highlighting the differences in their approaches.
McHargue also addressed the financial hurdles facing Nebraska's farmers, particularly the burden of property taxes. He expressed gratitude towards members for opposing a legislative proposal that would have taxed agricultural inputs, emphasizing the ongoing need for effective property tax relief measures.
He stressed the importance of ensuring equitable tax treatment for all property owners who complied with state law.
Regulatory challenges were also a focal point, with McHargue criticizing unnecessary regulations that hinder agricultural efficiency and productivity. He specifically mentioned the impacts of the EPA’s recent strategies on crop protection products and California’s Proposition 12, which imposes production method standards that affect Nebraska’s pork and poultry producers.
The speech also covered the significance of trade partnerships for Nebraska's agricultural sector. McHargue highlighted the inaction in trade negotiations under the current administration and underscored the urgency of securing better market access to compete globally.
He pointed out the potential long-term impacts of trade imbalances and the importance of bilateral and multilateral agreements to regain lost markets.
The Nebraska Farm Bureau continues to advocate for the state’s agricultural community by supporting policy initiatives that foster rural and urban prosperity and ensuring that Nebraska remains at the forefront of agricultural innovation and sustainability.
The annual meeting was not only a platform to set the year’s agenda but also a rallying call for continued unity and action among Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers.
