Nebraska Extension reported that Nebraska corn growers have faced challenging weather conditions during the 2026 growing season, with high humidity, extreme heat, and warm nighttime temperatures affecting pollination, kernel development, and crop maturity. Extension experts say these conditions have contributed to concerns about lower yields in some fields.
Researchers reported that York, Nebraska, experienced some of the highest dew points in the state since late June. Persistent humidity levels often remained above 60%, creating conditions that can interfere with pollen release and successful pollination.
High humidity can delay or reduce pollen shed, limiting fertilization of corn silks. In some cases, prolonged moisture in the air may have contributed to uneven kernel development and pollination issues.
The situation was further affected by below-normal wind speeds across eastern Nebraska during July. Reduced airflow can slow pollen movement and limit the drying of anther sacs, potentially impacting kernel set.
Prolonged periods of temperatures above 95°F also placed stress on corn plants during pollination and grain fill. Extension specialists noted that several consecutive days of extreme heat can reduce pollen viability and increase the risk of yield losses.
Agronomists also observed that many fields progressed unusually quickly through key reproductive stages, including milk and dough development. Warm nighttime temperatures above 70°F increased plant respiration, causing corn plants to use energy reserves for cooling instead of kernel growth.
Although recent rainfall improved soil moisture and reduced irrigation needs, experts say warm nights continued to accelerate crop maturity. Cooler nighttime temperatures would provide more favorable conditions as the crop approaches the end of the growing season.
