Nebraska Farmers Can Join Biochar Research

By Scout Nelson

American Farmland Trust, the US Biochar Initiative, the University of Nebraska, and Cornell University are collaborating on a Conservation Innovation Grant to study biochar use in agriculture. This research, funded by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) On-Farm Trials Conservation Innovation Grants, aims to assess the benefits and challenges of biochar application on farms.

On-Farm Biochar Research Opportunity:

Farmers in Nebraska interested in on-farm biochar experimentation are encouraged to participate in this research initiative. The study will help evaluate biochar's impact on soil health, crop yield, and sustainability. Those interested in conducting field trials should contact Dr. Guillermo Balboa or Michael Kaiser for more information.

National Biochar Survey:

In addition to field research, a national biochar survey is being conducted to gather insights from farmers who have used or are considering biochar. This survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete, and participants will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card as a thank-you for their time.

The survey seeks to identify:

  • Who is applying biochar, and where
  • Reasons for its adoption and success factors
  • Barriers to long-term biochar use
  • The findings will guide future strategies for promoting sustainable biochar application in agriculture.

Encouraging Participation:

Agricultural service providers and biochar suppliers are encouraged to share the survey within their networks to reach more farmers interested in biochar. Increasing awareness and participation will support efforts to expand biochar adoption in Nebraska’s farming communities.

For inquiries, contact Ellen Yeatman, social science analyst. More details about the study and survey can be accessed through AFT’s biochar partners.
