Nebraska Hosts Farm Transition Series

Nebraska Hosts Farm Transition Series

By Scout Nelson

The Center for Agricultural Profitability at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is set to launch "Returning to the Farm 2025," a comprehensive workshop series tailored for farm and ranch families planning generational transitions. The series kicks off with an initial two-day session on March 7 and 8 at Central Community College in Hastings, Nebraska, designed specifically for multi-generational family participants.

This educational series aims to equip families with the necessary tools to develop effective financial and transition plans, enhancing communication and setting shared goals. It addresses the unique challenges that come with passing agricultural operations from one generation to the next, emphasizing collaborative problem solving and strategic planning.

Jessica Groskopf, an extension educator, stresses the importance of this initiative: "Returning to the Farm gives families the tools and resources to have a successful transition with more family joining the business." The sessions are intended to be attended by two or three generations together, fostering a unified approach to learning and planning.

The workshops will cover a range of crucial topics including:

  • Effective communication strategies within families.
  • Goal setting for personal and professional development.
  • Creating detailed transition plans for farm or ranch operations.
  • Estate planning, focusing on identifying issues and formulating strategies.
  • Understanding financial feasibility and tools for sustainable business practices.

The cost of the workshop is $75 per person if registered by February 28, increasing to $85 thereafter. This fee includes meals during the in-person sessions and access to two additional virtual follow-up workshops on March 18 and April 8, aimed at reinforcing the strategies discussed and monitoring progress.

Each session will be facilitated by a blend of extension experts along with agribusiness and legal professionals, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience. While hotel accommodation is not covered, participants are encouraged to arrange their stay in Hastings for convenience.

For those interested, further details and registration information will soon be available, promising a valuable opportunity for farm families looking to secure their legacy and strengthen their operations for future generations.
