NRCS Approves Nebraska Watershed Project

NRCS Approves Nebraska Watershed Project

By Scout Nelson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), working with the Upper Niobrara-White Natural Resources District (NRD), received official approval in May for the Box Butte Creek Watershed Improvement Plan in western Nebraska. The project marks an important step toward improving water management, protecting local infrastructure, and supporting agriculture across the region.

The Box Butte Creek Watershed covers more than 162,000 acres in Box Butte, Dawes, and Sheridan Counties, north of the City of Alliance. The approved plan proposes the construction of catchment basins that will help increase groundwater recharge while reducing flood risks. It also includes road improvements designed to limit flood damage and improve transportation during severe weather events.

The estimated construction cost of the project is $2.7 million. Under the plan, the local sponsor will be responsible for approximately $1 million, while future financial assistance may be requested through federal conservation programs.

Funding for the planning process comes from the NRCS Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Operations Program (WFPO). This program provides technical and financial assistance to states, local governments, and tribal organizations to plan and carry out watershed improvement projects that protect natural resources and public safety.

With the watershed plan now approved, the Upper Niobrara-White NRD becomes eligible to seek additional NRCS funding to develop the agricultural water management and flood prevention projects identified in the plan. These improvements are expected to strengthen local water resources while supporting agricultural productivity and community resilience.

“NRCS is pleased to have provided technical and financial assistance to Upper Niobrara-White NRD for completing the Box Butte Creek Watershed Plan,” said Rob Lawson, NRCS Nebraska state conservationist. “One of our top priorities is assisting local sponsors in identifying and completing watershed projects for natural resource enhancements and public safety.”

Local officials also recognize the value of the partnership and the opportunities it creates for future conservation work.

“As local sponsors, we are most appreciative of NRCS’s commitment toward completing the watershed plan,” said Steve Sandberg, Upper Niobrara-White Natural Resources District Director. “Their partnership has helped us identify essential improvements in the Box Butte Creek Watershed to promote ground water recharge and prevent flood damage to local infrastructure.”
