UNL receives $16m boost for USDA research facility

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) is set to expand its agricultural research capabilities, thanks to an additional $16 million in federal funding earmarked for the construction of a new USDA Agricultural Research Service facility at the Nebraska Innovation Campus.

This funding, advanced by the Senate Appropriations Committee and strongly supported by U.S. Senator Deb Fischer, builds on a previous $25 million allocation and is part of the Fiscal Year 2025 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.

The new facility, named the National Center for Resilient and Regenerative Precision Agriculture, aims to position Nebraska as a leader in cutting-edge agricultural technologies.

"Agriculture is the bedrock of Nebraska’s economy. This week, I was able to secure additional funding for UNL’s new facility. This will attract students, scientists, and industry leaders focused on turning research into products and solutions in the field," stated Senator Fischer.

Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold, president of the University of Nebraska system, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support - “All of us at the University of Nebraska continue to be grateful for the leadership of Senator Fischer and our entire delegation in advocating for investments that will keep Nebraska at the forefront of agricultural innovation.”

The center will include four USDA ARS research units and a business incubator to fast-track research into practical applications, enhancing support for farmers, ranchers, and food manufacturers.

This initiative not only reinforces UNL's commitment to agricultural education and innovation but also supports the state's economic development in sustainable and digital agriculture.
