The University of Nebraska–Lincoln celebrates the induction of Edgar Cahoon, a prominent biochemist, into the prestigious National Academy of Inventors (NAI). This recognition is bestowed upon academic inventors who have notably enhanced societal welfare through their innovative contributions.
Cahoon, who holds the George Holmes Professorship of Biochemistry and directs UNL’s Center for Plant Science Innovation, has been instrumental in advancing the field of plant lipid biotechnology.
His work, aimed at developing oils with enhanced functionalities for food, feed, and industrial applications, has led to 36 U.S. patents, significantly enriching the nutritional and industrial value of crops.
His career at UNL has been marked by a commitment to applying scientific discoveries to practical uses, bolstering agriculture and societal well-being. This ethos is reflected in Cahoon's leadership in projects that have pioneered novel agricultural products, including renewable oil sources for aquaculture feed and biofortified crops aimed at addressing global nutritional deficiencies.
Significant achievements include his role in developing substitutes for fish oil, enhancing the sustainability of the aquaculture industry, and pioneering the genetic engineering of cassava plants to increase their provitamin A content. This work not only addresses vitamin A deficiency but also supports global health initiatives.
Cahoon's research extends beyond nutritional enhancements. He has explored the use of novel plant oils as Bio lubricants and developed biofuels from alternative crop sources like pennycress and camelina. His efforts in plant-based aquaculture feed aim to increase astaxanthin levels in soybean oil, improving the quality and sustainability of fish farming.
Recognized globally, Cahoon's work underpins the mission of the NAI and exemplifies the university's dedication to innovation that serves both local and global communities. His induction into the NAI as a fellow highlight his profound impact on agricultural science and positions UNL at the forefront of academic research and innovation.
