USDA's $15M boost for Hispanic Ag education

USDA's $15M boost for Hispanic Ag education

By Jamie Martin

As Hispanic Heritage Month concludes, the USDA has earmarked more than $15 million to advance agriculture-related higher education across Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSI). This funding aims to foster diverse participation in the agricultural sector, addressing the underrepresentation of Hispanic students in STEM fields.

USDA Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small highlighted the importance of these institutions in preparing Hispanic students for careers in agriculture, emphasizing the administration's commitment to supporting their educational endeavors. The investment will facilitate hands-on training and experiential learning, equipping students with necessary skills for the workforce.

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) will manage these funds through its Hispanic-serving Institutions Education Grants Program, which focuses on attracting students from underrepresented demographics and preparing them for careers in food, agriculture, and related sciences.

The initiative also seeks to improve postsecondary instruction and provide greater career access in public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Several innovative projects are set to receive funding, including collaborative efforts between the University of New Mexico-Taos and New Mexico Highlands University. These projects will offer leadership training, literacy support, and experiential education, aiming to cultivate skilled graduates ready to tackle local and global challenges in natural resource management.

This strategic investment by the USDA not only underscores the agency’s dedication to building a diverse agricultural workforce but also aligns with broader federal efforts to enhance educational outcomes and career prospects for Hispanic students across the United States.
