Nebraska workshop focuses on crop insurance

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska Extension is set to host a comprehensive crop insurance workshop for agricultural producers and agribusiness professionals on October 23 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, located at 700 E. Stolley Park Rd. This workshop aims to enhance participants' risk management strategies and deepen their understanding of crop insurance.

Cory Walters, an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, emphasizes the importance of understanding crop insurance. “Understanding crop insurance can give producers a financial advantage,” he stated. “Failure to understand how it works can leave producers financially stressed and at a financial disadvantage.”

The workshop will cover various important topics, including updates on the farm bill, presentations on current climate trends, and insights into the Annual Forage and Livestock Risk Protection insurance programs. Additionally, attendees can expect a market outlook, discussions on insurance and reinsurance, and an update from the USDA Risk Management Agency.

This event is part of a series produced in collaboration between Nebraska Extension and Kansas State University Research and Extension, ensuring participants gain a well-rounded understanding of the current landscape of crop insurance and risk management.

Registration for the workshop is $100 and is required by October 14. A late fee of $20 will apply after October 18. Interested participants can complete their registration at https://cropinsure.unl.edu. For additional questions or information, contact Cory Walters at 402-472-0366 or via email at cwalters7@unl.edu.

This workshop represents a valuable opportunity for producers and agribusiness professionals to gain essential knowledge and tools to navigate crop insurance effectively.
