Nebraska Farm Bureau launches health plans

Nebraska Farm Bureau launches health plans

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) is set to transform health insurance for Nebraskans with the launch of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Health Plans. Beginning October 1, 2024, these new plans are designed to provide lower health insurance costs, particularly benefiting self-employed individuals and small business owners who have traditionally faced higher premiums.

“The current health care insurance market discriminates against self-employed individuals and small business owners because they are not eligible for the discounted rates available under employer-sponsored plans. This includes farmers, ranchers, and nearly all small business owners in the state,” said Mark McHargue, NEFB president.

The Nebraska Farm Bureau Health Plans offer a significant alternative to the federal marketplace, with rates potentially 30% to 50% lower than unsubsidized ACA plans.

The introduction of these plans follows the passage of LB 1313, which allows nonprofit agricultural organizations like NEFB to sponsor health benefit plans.

Unlike traditional insurance, these plans are medically underwritten and individually rated, providing considerable savings. They offer comprehensive coverage including office visits, hospitalization, preventive care, emergency services, and mental health care.

“These plans are high-quality, dependable, and affordable health coverage plans for individuals and families,” said Kelsey Scheer, assistant director of NEFB Health Plans. The plans feature a nationwide PPO network, United HealthCare Choice Plus, with various deductible and out-of-pocket options.

The plans will be self-funded and administered by Farm Bureau Health Plans of Tennessee, serving multiple state Farm Bureaus across the U.S. Only NEFB members can apply, and maintaining membership is necessary to keep the plan active.

Applications are accepted year-round through Farm Bureau Financial Services (FBFS) agents. For more details, visit www.nefbhp.com.

The Nebraska Farm Bureau supports farm and ranch families through various educational, service, and advocacy efforts. With over 55,000 members, it aims to advance rural and urban prosperity by enhancing Nebraska’s agricultural sector. For more information, visit www.nefb.org.
