New Baling Automation Helps Farmers Do More

Farmers are gaining access to new technology that can make baling simpler, faster, and more efficient. A newly introduced Hands-Free Baling system integrates multiple automation features to reduce operator workload while maintaining consistent bale quality.

The solution is built for cornstalk and straw baling and combines guidance, turning, speed, gate, and weaving functions into a single automated process. This coordinated approach helps tractors and balers operate more smoothly and consistently across the field.

“The hands-free baling technology combines John Deere’s legacy guidance feature, AutoTrac, with our innovative Weave Automation round baler feature, creating a solution that was built shoulder-to-shoulder with our customers. It makes a repetitive baling job easier and more efficient,” said Kaylene Ballesteros, marketing manager for hay and forage equipment at John Deere.

She added, “By automating the baling process, we’re helping operators simplify their job and reduce the opportunity for error.”

Key capabilities include automatic windrow tracking, consistent bale formation, automated speed adjustments, bale wrapping and ejection control, and accurate headland turning. These features work together to reduce the amount of steering and manual control needed from the operator.

The technology is intended to help producers during demanding harvest seasons when maximizing productivity is essential. By lowering the amount of operator involvement, farms may be able to use labor more effectively and complete baling tasks with greater consistency.

Performance testing has shown notable gains from automation. Results indicate productivity improvements of up to 8.4%, fuel efficiency gains of up to 4.4%, and significant reductions in operator activity. These improvements can help make long workdays in the field more manageable.

Another benefit of the system is its ability to connect with other precision agriculture tools already being used on the farm. Guidance information collected during previous field operations can be used to support a more connected workflow from planting and growing through harvest.

The technology also supports enhanced operational records and data visibility, allowing farmers to better track their work and make informed management decisions.
