The University of Nebraska—Lincoln (UNL) is presenting an invaluable educational opportunity for beef producers with its 2024 Cow-Calf College. Hosted by Nebraska Extension, this event offers insights from UNL's top veterinarians and researchers into various aspects of cow and calf health.
The college is scheduled for Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. (CST), at the Great Plains Veterinary Education Center (GPVEC), near Clay Center, Nebraska.
The day's program is set to cover a wide array of topics essential to beef production. These include management of infectious diseases, newborn calf health, pinkeye, scours, and the causes of bovine abortion. There will also be guidance on when it's critical to call a veterinarian.
Dr. Matt Hille, an assistant professor and diagnostic pathologist at the Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center, will lead the program, discussing the management of infectious diseases from birth to weaning. During the lunch, which is provided, Dr. Brian Vander Ley, associate professor and assistant director of GPVEC, will give an overview of the ongoing work at GPVEC.
The afternoon sessions are packed with valuable information. Dr. Hille will delve into bovine abortion causes and the diagnostic tools available to producers. Dr. Lindsay Waechter-Mead, a livestock systems educator with Nebraska Extension, will discuss neonatal calf care.
Dr. Becky Funk, an animal health and teaching Extension specialist at GPVEC, will conduct a wet lab, offering a hands-on experience for producers to explore bovine reproductive tracts.
This event is free of charge, but pre-registration is required to manage food and supply counts. Beef producers interested in attending can register by calling the Webster County Extension office at 402-746-3417 or visiting the event website at UNL Cow-Calf College Registration.
