28th range beef cow symposium announced for December

By Scout Nelson

The 28th Range Beef Cow Symposium, organized by the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University, is scheduled for December 13-14 at The Ranch in Loveland, Colorado. A tradition since 1969, this event is a collaborative effort among universities from Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, rotating host duties each year.

Associate Professor and Extension Beef Specialist Ryan Rhoades highlights the symposium's regional focus, addressing common beef production challenges across the four states. The event offers a platform for universities to present their research and for local producers to easily participate and gain insights.

About 50 vendors will showcase their products and services, and the symposium will include the Bull Pen sessions—a series of smaller group discussions allowing for direct interaction between producers and experts on specialized topics.

The symposium will spotlight various hot topics, including high altitude disease by Dr. Tim Holt and cattle emissions measurement by Dr. Pedro Carvalho. It will also delve into policy changes, land-use strategies, consumer preferences in beef, and direct beef marketing.

An important session on wolf reintroduction will discuss new developments, mitigation strategies, and compensation plans.

A pre-symposium Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Certification Workshop is also on the agenda for those looking to add this credential.

Sponsored by the cooperative Extension Services and Animal Science Departments of the four states' universities, the symposium is biennial and tailored to deliver pertinent production management knowledge to the region’s cattle producers.
