In a recent N Field Observations episode, University of Nebraska-Lincoln weed management specialist Amit Jhala demonstrated a precision sprayer that uses cameras and real-time plant recognition technology to identify weeds in soybean fields.

The system can distinguish weeds from crop plants as it moves through the field. Rather than spraying an entire field, it targets only the weeds that need treatment, making herbicide applications more precise and efficient.

By focusing on specific weed locations, the technology can help farmers reduce chemical use and lower input costs without compromising weed control. It also supports site-specific crop management, allowing producers to make more informed decisions based on real-time field conditions.

The precision sprayer uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to detect weeds and make rapid spraying decisions. This approach can improve the effectiveness of crop protection programs while reducing unnecessary herbicide applications.
