Beef Producers Invited to Genetics Survey

Beef Producers Invited to Genetics Survey

By Jamie Martin

A new nationwide survey is asking beef producers to share how they choose bulls and semen for their herds. The survey is being conducted by eBEEF, a group of extension specialists who work in beef cattle genetics across the United States.

The survey focuses on understanding producer breeding goals, bull selection practices, and the challenges faced when making genetic decisions. This information will be used to improve extension training programs, educational resources, and research projects related to beef cattle breeding.

Only producers who are involved in genetic selection on their operations are encouraged to participate. Their feedback will help extension professionals design programs that are more practical, clear, and helpful for real farm situations.

Jamie Courter, an extension specialist working with the project, said that listening to producers is essential for building strong research and education programs.

“The best way to understand the needs of the beef industry is to hear from them directly,” said Courter. “Better understanding the needs and ideas of Missouri beef producers and those across the U.S. will help all extension professionals better serve the industry. It will drive research projects and extension materials for the foreseeable future, until it’s time to ask these same questions again.”

To thank participants for their time, producers who complete the survey and share an email address may enter a prize draw. Five gift cards are being offered with sponsorship from the Beef Improvement Federation.

Courter also encouraged producers to take part by reminding them that their opinions play an important role in shaping the future of the beef industry. “Your voice matters,” said Courter. “By participating, you’re helping ensure that beef genetics research and extension efforts stay relevant, practical and producer-driven.”

By completing the survey, beef producers can directly influence the development of better breeding tools, stronger extension programs, and improved research efforts. Their participation supports healthier herds, better breeding choices, and stronger farm operations across the country.
