Winter Garden Care Guide Released

Winter Garden Care Guide Released

By Scout Nelson

A new January February Garden Guide has been released to help gardeners protect plants during winter and prepare for successful spring growth. The guide offers simple, effective steps that improve plant health, prevent damage, and support better garden planning.

Gardeners are advised to prune fruit trees and grape vines in late February or early March. This timing allows the worst winter cold to pass while ensuring pruning is done before new spring growth begins. Pruning during this period helps shape plants and encourages stronger production.

Vegetables stored indoors, such as potatoes and onions, should be checked regularly. Any vegetables showing signs of rotting or shriveling should be removed to prevent spoilage of healthy produce.

The guide reminds gardeners not to start vegetable transplants too early. Fast-growing plants such as tomatoes should be started indoors about six weeks before planting outdoors. Slower-growing plants like peppers should start about eight weeks before planting time.

January is a recommended time to order flower and vegetable seeds. Many popular varieties sell quickly, so early ordering helps secure preferred seed choices.

Young trees and shrubs should be checked for damage caused by rodents or rabbits. Protective fencing or collars can be used to prevent further injury.

Late February is also suitable for air-layering certain houseplants such as dracaena and rubber plants, especially those that have grown tall or weak. Houseplants should be checked for insect pests, and any new plants should be kept separate until confirmed pest-free.

Winter air inside homes is often dry, which can affect houseplants. Humidity can be improved by placing pots on trays filled with pebbles and water, ensuring water levels stay below the pot base.

Gardeners are encouraged to avoid heavy foot traffic on frozen lawns to prevent damage. Snow should also be brushed off evergreen branches using gentle upward motions.

The guide also suggests reviewing last year’s garden records to plan for better results in the coming season.
