Government expands high-speed internet in rural areas

By Jamie Martin

The Administration continues its commitment to rural development as USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announces $313 million in funding to expand high-speed internet access in 18 states. This initiative is part of the ReConnect Program, designed to connect the most remote and underserved communities in the U.S.

“Keeping the people of rural America connected with good, reliable high-speed internet brings new and innovative ideas to the rest of our country and creates good-paying jobs,” Secretary Vilsack said.

This round of funding will impact states like Michigan, Arizona, and Washington. For example, Waldron Communication Co. in Michigan will receive $6 million to connect 599 people, 18 businesses, and 32 farms. Meanwhile, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation in Washington will receive $19.1 million to provide internet to farms and businesses across the region.

The ReConnect Program has allocated $4.4 billion since 2021 to improve connectivity for more than 680,000 residents. It aims to ensure all Americans have high-speed internet by 2030.
