Nebraska confirms avian flu in poultry flocks

By Scout Nelson

Two cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have been detected in Nebraska poultry flocks, according to the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) and USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). These mark the second and third cases in Nebraska poultry this year.

The first case was identified in a commercial turkey flock in Nemaha County, while the second involved a small backyard chicken flock in Dodge County.

“HPAI is a highly contagious virus that is still circulating in wild birds, and in backyard and commercial flocks around the U.S.,” said State Veterinarian Dr. Roger Dudley. “Poultry producers need to continue to monitor and protect their birds against HPAI. Knowing the signs and symptoms of HPAI and continuing to practice good biosecurity measures helps prevent the spread of this disease in their flocks.”

About HPAI

HPAI spreads easily among birds via nasal and eye secretions, contaminated food or water, and manure. Wild birds, migratory flocks, and human activity can transmit the virus to poultry. Domesticated birds may experience severe illness or sudden death.

Symptoms of HPAI in Birds

Poultry producers should watch for signs of HPAI, including decreased water consumption, lethargy, reduced egg production, nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, incoordination, diarrhea, and sudden death. The virus can persist in contaminated environments for weeks.

Producers are encouraged to report suspected cases or unusual bird deaths to the NDA at 402-471-2351 or USDA at 866-536-7593. Additional resources on HPAI prevention and response are available at nda.nebraska.gov/animal/avian/ and the USDA website.

Maintaining vigilant monitoring and strong biosecurity practices is critical to controlling HPAI and protecting Nebraska’s poultry industry.
