I-3 Program Blends Learning with Real-world Impact

By Scout Nelson

A new university program is equipping students with essential skills in leadership, innovation, and inclusivity, preparing them for diverse career paths. The Institute for Inclusive Innovation (I-3) offers a one-year immersive experience designed to combine academic learning with real-world application.

The program begins in the fall with a 10-week intensive session, focusing on key topics such as cultural intelligence, inclusive leadership, communication, creativity, branding, and entrepreneurship. This curriculum helps students understand the interconnected nature of these concepts. Interactive workshops, led by industry professionals, provide practical tools and strategies applicable across various fields.

“Many of the speakers shared great tools and strategies for creative thinking, emphasizing that it doesn’t have to be complex,” said Jessica Wynne, a junior communication studies major. “I found all of these insights incredibly helpful, and I’ve been applying them to areas I’ve been struggling with lately. They’ve been valuable reminders and have made a real difference for me.”

A hallmark of the I-3 program is its emphasis on experiential learning during the spring semester. Students transition to internships and projects aligned with their interests, academic backgrounds, and career goals. Partnering with diverse organizations, the program ensures students gain hands-on experience in fields ranging from healthcare and technology to arts and business.

Through these tailored opportunities, participants apply the program’s core principles of leadership, innovation, and inclusive excellence. Whether working on organizational projects, receiving mentorship from CEOs, or pursuing personalized initiatives, students develop skills that resonate with their individual goals.

“I will take with me how closely innovation and DEI knowledge are connected and what I can do with a creative and open mind to truly leave an impact on communities,” said Caroline Smith, a junior business administration major. “I think this program will open the door for a lot of students to understand the correlation between DEI knowledge and better workplace environments.”

The program concludes with a spring showcase where students present their achievements. A completion ceremony awards them I-3 certificates, marking their readiness to excel in their future careers.

“The I-3 program is an incredible experience that not only prepares the next cohort of leaders but also inspires them,” said Jathesn Xretqalin, a junior advertising and public relations major. “Students have a great support system and educational opportunities while simultaneously networking with professionals.

The I-3 program exemplifies the importance of holistic learning, fostering future leaders equipped to drive innovation and inclusivity in their chosen fields.
