For the week ending July 30, 2023, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service reported 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated as 20% very short, 31% short, 47% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 26% very short, 34% short, 39% adequate, and 1% surplus.
Regarding field crops, corn condition was rated with 6% very poor, 12% poor, 25% fair, 41% good, and 16% excellent. Corn silking progress was ahead of the five-year average, while dough progress was behind the average.
Soybean condition was rated with 8% very poor, 12% poor, 26% fair, 40% good, and 14% excellent. Soybeans' blooming progress was near average, while setting pods progress was slightly ahead of average.
Winter wheat harvest progress was behind average. Sorghum condition was rated with 1% very poor, 6% poor, 31% fair, 55% good, and 7% excellent. Sorghum headed progress was near average, and coloring progress was close to both last year and the average.
4% of the oats were assessed as very poor, 14% as poor, 32% fair, and 8% as exceptional. The harvesting of oats was much behind schedule.
Condition ratings for dry edible beans were 0% very poor, 5% poor, 32 moderate, 56% good, and 7% excellent. The flowering of dry edible beans lagged significantly behind the previous year. Progress on setting pods outpaced that of the previous year.
Conditions were graded as 5% very poor, 10% poor, 31% fair, 39% good, and 15% outstanding in the pasture and range category.
