Nebraska's fields were full of activity for the week ending October 1, 2023. The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service reported that the state's crop harvest kept pace with, or even surpassed, the average rates. With nearly a full week suitable for fieldwork, moisture levels remained stable, but with a slight tilt towards dryness in both topsoil and subsoil.
Diving into specific crops:
Corn: Showed promising signs with 86% maturity and 22% harvest, surpassing previous rates. Overall condition mostly leaned towards good.
Soybeans: About 95% of soybeans have dropped their leaves and 29% have been harvested, keeping pace with past averages. The crop's health varied but was generally positive.
Winter Wheat: This crop showed a stellar performance with 79% planted and 38% emerged, outpacing both last year's and the average figures.
Sorghum: It matured at 64% and was harvested at 14%. Its overall condition was predominantly excellent.
Dry Edible Beans: With 90% dropping leaves and 58% harvested, these beans were closely aligned with last year's performance.
On the pasture front, the range and pasture conditions presented a balanced picture with a majority in the good to excellent bracket.
