The Nebraska State Dairy Association (NSDA) has awarded Dr. Paul Kononoff, a distinguished professor and Dairy Nutrition Extension Specialist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the prestigious Philip H.
Cole Industry Person of the Year for 2024. This accolade is awarded annually to individuals who have significantly advanced the Nebraska dairy industry through exceptional leadership, innovation, and commitment.
Kris Bousquet, Executive Director of NSDA, praised Dr. Kononoff for his profound impact on dairy nutrition globally. “Dr. Kononoff is respected as one of the brightest minds in dairy cattle nutrition in the world.
His commitment to research, mentorship of countless students, and his unwavering support of Nebraska’s dairy producers have had a profound impact on our industry. There is no one more deserving of this recognition than Paul.”
Over his career, Dr. Kononoff has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles and has advised 31 graduate students.
His research has been instrumental in acquiring significant grants for studies aimed at reducing methane production in cattle. This research not only advances scientific understanding but also contributes to more sustainable dairy farming practices.
Additionally, Dr. Kononoff's work includes the chemical characterization of feeds grown in Nebraska, focusing on optimizing the nutritional support they provide during the critical lactation periods of dairy cows.
His leadership extends beyond research as he serves as a board member for both the NSDA and the Dairy Council of Nebraska and as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dairy Science.
Dr. Kononoff’s contributions exemplify the spirit of the Philip H. Cole Award, as he has continuously worked to support and grow Nebraska’s dairy sector. His efforts will be formally recognized at the NSDA Annual Meeting & Tradeshow on February 25th in West Point, Nebraska.
