Nebraska extension hosts calving workshops for proactive farming

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska Extension is gearing up to conduct two practical Calving Workshops, offering hands-on experience in managing the calving season effectively. These sessions are scheduled for January 18 at the South Platte NRD Building in Sidney and January 19 at the NCTA Livestock Teaching Center in Curtis.

The workshops, led by Becky Funk and Lindsay Waechter-Mead, will cover essential topics such as proper calving equipment use, handling dystocia, and timely intervention. Participants will also have the opportunity to experience hands-on demonstrations using a life-size cow and calf model.

Nebraska Extension beef educator Aaron Berger emphasizes the importance of preparing for calving season, including adequate nutrition, regular herd health checks, and a well-maintained facility, to minimize calf loss and reduce stress.  Workshops will provide guidance on correcting malpresentations and managing difficult births.

Participants will also learn about the essentials of a calving kit, including obstetrical supplies, feeding equipment, and calf health management tools. Special attention will be given to dealing with weather-related challenges, particularly for calves born in cold, wet conditions.

Nebraska Extension is implementing workshops to educate producers on calves' health and wellbeing, aiming to enhance agricultural practices and contribute to a successful calving season, demonstrating their dedication to education and practical training.

With a registration fee of $30 and free attendance for students, these workshops present a valuable opportunity for anyone involved in cattle farming.

For those interested in the Sidney workshop, contact Aaron Berger at 308-235-3122 or aberger2@unl.edu. To register for the Curtis workshop, reach out to Erin Laborie at 308-268-3105 or erin.laborie@unl.edu
