Nebraska extension’s cover crop and soil health event

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska Extension invites farmers and growers to the University of Nebraska’s Rogers Memorial Farm for the annual Cover Crop and Soil Health Field Day on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The event will feature hands-on demonstrations and expert-led discussions on innovative farming practices that enhance soil health. A free lunch will be provided, and registration is required.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore a variety of topics aimed at improving soil health. One of the key highlights is a soil pit demonstration as part of a long-term tillage study comparing no-till with other systems, now in its 44th year. Additionally, a statewide study evaluating cover crop variety selection and performance will be showcased.

Other presentations include:

Health and Structure: Ray Ward from Ward Laboratories and Candy Thomas from NRCS will discuss soil structure at the soil pit demonstration.

Cover Crop Studies: Andrea Basche will present on various cover crops and cultivars.

Double Crop Options: John Nelson will explore double crop options after wheat harvest.

Nitrogen Dynamics: Javed Iqbal will cover carbon and nitrogen dynamics in soils.

Cover Crop Management: Katja Koehler-Cole will offer insights on growing and managing cover crops for soil health.

Seeding Techniques: Paul Jasa will provide guidance on seeding cover crops.

The event will be held at 18630 Adams St., Lincoln, Nebraska, about seven miles east of the city. Farmers interested in attending should email Paul Jasa before Sunday, Sept. 15, to confirm their attendance and ensure lunch and materials are available.
