The Nebraska USDA Farm Service Agency is reminding livestock producers about available disaster assistance programs following recent wildfires. Farmers who have faced livestock deaths, grazing losses, or feed shortages may qualify for financial support.
Two main programs are available to help producers. The Livestock Indemnity Program provides payments for livestock deaths that are higher than normal due to weather events. The Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program supports losses related to feed shortages, water issues, disease, or other conditions not covered by other programs.
Producers must follow certain steps to receive assistance. They need to report losses and submit a notice to their local FSA office by March 1, 2027, for losses that occur during the 2026 calendar year. Proper documentation is very important to qualify for these programs.
Farmers should keep clear records of their losses. This includes the number and type of animals lost, along with details such as weight and age. Photos or videos can help prove ownership and confirm losses. Receipts from rendering services are also important before disposal of livestock.
Other useful documents include records of livestock inventory, such as birth records or purchase receipts. Reports from official agencies can help confirm that losses are caused by eligible conditions. Farmers should also document if animals are removed from grazing areas due to wildfire damage.
Producers may need to provide receipts for feed purchases or transportation costs if pastures are destroyed. Records of water transport during shortages are also required. These documents help verify the extent of the losses and support the application process.
The goal of these programs is to help farmers recover from disaster events and continue their operations. By keeping proper records and meeting deadlines, producers can access important financial assistance.
