Nebraska Fields Report Strong September Crop Growth

Nebraska crops moved forward last week as warm, dry conditions allowed harvest preparations to begin and encouraged early winter wheat planting. For the week ending September 8, 2025, farmers had 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork across the state. Topsoil moisture was rated 4% very short, 20% short, 69% adequate, and 7% surplus. Subsoil moisture stood at 5% very short, 22% short, 67% adequate, and 6% surplus.

Field Crops Report

Corn progress continues with 92% of the crop in the dough stage, slightly behind 96% last year and the five-year average of 97%. About 70% of corn is dented, trailing 82% last year and the average. Corn maturity reached 23%, compared with 29% last year and 28% for the average. Condition ratings show 2% very poor, 4% poor, 18% fair, 50% good, and 26% excellent.

Soybeans reached 95% in the pod-setting stage, slightly behind last year and the five-year average of 100%. Leaves are dropping to 14% of the crop, behind 22% last year and 33% average. Condition ratings are 1% very poor, 3% poor, 20% fair, 52% good, and 24% excellent.

Sorghum heading stands at 92%, below 100% last year and 99% average. Coloring is 61%, behind 85% last year and 78% average, while 5% is mature compared with 7% last year and 11% average. Conditions are 1% very poor, 1% poor, 18% fair, 38% good, and 42% excellent.

Winter wheat planting is ahead at 8%, surpassing 6% last year and the five-year average of 5%.

Dry edible beans are 98% blooming, 93% setting pods, 28% dropping leaves, and 2% harvested. Condition is rated 1% very poor, 1% poor, 22% fair, 39% good, and 37% excellent.

Pasture and range conditions are 7% very poor, 14% poor, 33% fair, 36% good, and 10% excellent, showing steady overall progress across Nebraska fields.
